And now we wait: EUB questions submitted

If you're following developments, you'll know Solar NB Solaire has teamed up with CanREA, the Canadian Renewable Energy Association, to form the ‘Behind the Meter Technologies Coalition’ (BTMC). Our coalition has official Intervener status before the EUB as it considers the puzzling, solar-harming net metering changes NB Power has proposed. We’re working hard to represent the interests of installers and suppliers, plus every homeowner, business owner and farmer with solar or planning to have solar in the future.


Two weeks ago, we submitted 18 pages of questions to the Energy and Utilities Board - questions for NB Power to answer, on the record, the about their proposed changes to net metering. The questions were developed after combing through everything NB Power submitted to the EUB in support of its proposals.


We're expecting responses soon (some of which will likely be very interesting).  We'll be examining them closely.  If needed, we'll be submitting some supplementary questions, which will need to be answered through August.


Then, into the fall:

  • If necessary, we’ll prepare evidence of our own and submit it to the EUB

  • We’ll be front and center in the actual EUB hearings in October, to represent the interests of our industry and all solar system owners


Yes, it’s a long, complicated and expensive process, especially for a small, volunteer-reliant organization like ours (and a process that could have been avoided had NB Power simply consulted with our industry first).  But it’s worth it, to ensure a strong future for solar in New Brunswick!  In David-versus-Goliath battles, Goliath shouldn't get a free pass.

Going through a formal regulatory process like this is complicated, requiring legal and technical expertise.  It's also expensive, and is putting a huge strain on our current resources (as our only revenue is membership dues and sponsorships).


Every solar user in New Brunswick — every household, farm, and business that has already invested in solar, and everyone considering it — is counting on this work to protect the program that made solar viable in the first place.


So please consider helping out financially. Whether you can give $25 or $2,500, your contribution will make a direct difference, and help us keep our legal and technical team at the table through every step of this process.

Our membership list and mailing list continue to grow weekly, as more solar stakeholders learn about NB Power’s proposed net metering changes, and what we're doing to oppose them. We’re really pleased with that – but there are still many NB stakeholders we haven’t reached.
